Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first roles on television included two roles on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mom. Fearing stress, her parents did not want to see her pursue acting before she turned 18. Perry stated she felt shy to act in high school but began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated to New York in search of TV roles. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness brought her back to California in search of theater jobs. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC show Scandal. She played the role of a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
